SPEECH BY HEAD GIRL IN THE PINNING CEREMONY

In the poet Robert Frost’s most influential poem "The Road Not Taken", he comments on making life-changing decisions by saying: "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I--took the one less travelled by, and that, has made ALL the difference." I find this really inspiring, and in fact, this applies to me myself this year, with everything happening in the blink of an eye.

My decision to serve in the Central Board as an executive member came about just only a year ago. But looking back, from the second I suddenly gained a strong sense of courage and handed in my self-nomination form, to the moment I stepped off the stage just after the platform, every moment and every feeling I've experienced reassures me that the road I’ve chosen would be, and IS worth traveling by. So I asked myself: how could we truly grow and learn without making those decisions, and exposing ourselves to new realms?

As this year’s school theme goes: "Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony." Recalling my life journey, I find that, what matters to people the most is love, and it’s the very thing that brings everyone forward, and together. I began to notice the acts of love all of us here do to, and for each other every day—from giving a heartwarming smile across the corridor or an affectionate hug to show comfort and encouragement; to devoting themselves to caring for the underprivileged in our community, or even those living across the equator, just like some of our Good Hopers, who went to Africa to spread their kindness last year.  The energy these actions give truly moves my heart and makes me realize how powerful love is to all beings in our world. Love is the root of all the interactions between us.

So that’s how I decided to take the responsibility to maintain and strengthen these positive vibes with my new role at school, and along with the incoming exco members, here I am, ready to serve with diligence and sincerity, to have my ears open to listen to your voices, to keep my heart passionate and dedicated to care and cater for your needs, and to warmly join hands with you and fill our school with what binds us all, together.

I'd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the school for putting her trust in me to serve you all, as well as everyone who has shown their support or concern in every way--family, friends, teachers, schoolmates alike, with their heartening words, elaborate advice and remindful criticisms, all of these have helped me understand myself better, stimulated me to reflect on my weaknesses, and given me another perspective to look at myself, enabling me to become a more reflective person. As the cliché goes, 'whatever does not kill you makes you stronger'. With open minds, tolerant hearts, and the determination to promote your well-being and happiness, the exco members and I will better-equip ourselves to be capable leaders so as to strengthen the bond among all of us.

We Good Hopers are ONE family, striving towards the same goal of having another fascinating and fruitful year. The road we’ll be travelling by will definitely be full of ups and downs, but, no matter what adversities we have ahead, WE, the Central Board 2016-2017, will connect, care and change TOGETHER with you, so all of us can extend our wings, fly high and reach the stars together. We also sincerely hope that, everyone here would do the same for one another, now and in the future, so the spirit of love and hope can persevere in our school and in our world, now and forever. Thank you.
